Present population: approx. 38 million inhabitants.
Approximately 62% of the population lives in cities. There are 42 cities with more than 100 000 inhabitants. Warsaw, the capital of the country is the biggest city. Other big cities are: Lodz (842.000), Cracovia (751.000), Wroclaw (644.000), Poznan (589.000), Gdansk (467.000), Szczecin (448.000), Bydgoszcz (384.000), Katowice (359.000) and Lublin (352.000). The Polish community abroad is generally an estimated 12-15 million people. The largest concentrations of Poles are in the United States (6 million), Russia, Bielorrusia, Lituania, the Ukraine and Kazajstán (2,5-3 million altogether), Germany (0.8 million), France (0.8 million), Canada (400 thousands), Brazil (200 000), Australia (150 000), Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.
